Beautiful Torrey Pines
The Torrey Pines Golf Course, one of the world's most famous golf destinations, was established in 1957 and is owned by the city of San Diego. The course is named after the Torrey Pine, a rare tree that only grows along this stretch of coastline. Its famous trees are often photographed, and can be seen along the entire length of the course. Although it is a public course, golfers often arrive as early at 6:00pm the prior night in order to receive a tee time, which is given out in first come, first served fashion at sunrise. In addition to world-class golfing, the Torrey Pines Golf Course is also home to one of the largest pro shops in the nation.
Torrey Pines boasts two 18-hole courses, both designed by William F. Bell. The South Course, with a length of 7,607 yards and a course rating of 78.1, is the more difficult of the two. It was completely redesigned by Rees Jones in 2001. Today it is recognized as one of the most challenging courses in the nation. The North Course measures 6,874 yards, and has a rating of 72.1. It is said to be much more forgiving for casual golfers.
Torrey Pines is home to the Buick Invitational, a PGA Tour event held annually in January or February. The 2008 U.S. Open Golf Championship was also held here. That event was won by Tiger Woods, who beat Rocco Mediate in a sudden death playoff. At 7,607 yards, the South Course is the longest course home to a regular PGA Tour event.
Perched on cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean to the west and bounded by mountains to the North, golfers enjoy panoramic views of the coastline and ravines. In addition to the Torrey Pines, nature lovers can also spot wildlife as they play. Often described as one of the most scenic golf courses in the nation, if not the world, Torrey Pines is truly a golfer's paradise.
