Match Play Golfing
Match play golf events are becoming more and more popular, but they require a different approach and scoring method that can be tricky for golfers to master. Match play is not the same as stroke play, and requires a particular strategy. This head-to-head scoring method can actually have drastic affects on the way you play the game.
During match play golf events, one golfer or team is pitted against another. The golfers compete for each hole, rather than comparing total scores (as in stroke play). You win the hole by shooting the lowest score. If two golfers or teams tie on the hole, each gets a half point. Whoever wins the most holes on the course wins the match. If the competitors finish the course with the same number of holes won, the match is halved.
Because of the pressure to win every hole, rather than compensating for poorly played holes with a par or birdie later down the line, the player who plays the best under pressure usually wins the match. By improving how you handle the pressure, you can improve your chances of winning. However, this is very difficult to practice, unless you can muster an audience for every practice game.
When on the tee during a match play tournament, it's more important than ever to hit the fairway with a long, straight shot. A good drive increases the pressure on your opponent, especially if you're the first off the tee. During match play, it is crucial to apply as much pressure as possible to your opponent. On the other hand, remember that you can hit a bad shot and still not lose the hole if your opponent also does poorly on that hole. Don't panic if you hit a bad shot off the tee, or if your opponent has a particularly good drive.
Once on the green, how aggressive you should putt depends on the standing. If you must make the putt in one shot to halve or win the hole, be aggressive. If you only need to make it in 2 shots, a more conservative approach may be in order to avoid costing you additional strokes.
Scoring in match play golf has a whole new set of terms, including All Square, Halve, and Dormie, 1-UP, and 5 and 4. This can make scoring very confusing, since results are reported not by strokes, but by how many more holes the leader has won and the number of holes left in them match. 1-UP means that a player has won one more hole than the other. All Square is a tie. The term 'Dormie' means that one player is winning by the same number of holes left in the match, so the best the opponent can do is tie, or Halve.
Match play golf events may not last all 18 holes. If one player is up by so many holes that it would be impossible for the other to win, the match ends. Players also do not need to finish every hole. If there is no way for a player to win the hole, he might concede to the opponent. As a result, there is frequently less putting in match play golf than most golfers are accustomed to.
