Why does society accept blatant discrimination against men more than women?
I am not have to rant but for some reason I feel discrimination against men is more tolerated than women because people are always quick to justify it because some see women as weaker in these respects yet are quick to speak against discrimination women may face in hiring, pay, or social respect for equality. For example the Augusta golf club practice of banning females was considered by some women and men are sexist yet no one challenges clubs that ban men and some practices and events used by clubs such as ladies night which allow women to get free or discounted costs on admission or drink is never considered discrimination. Also the same can be said about criminal offenses. Society and the law has no problem prosecuting and looking down a man for a slightest infraction of sexual harassment or violence against women but is way more lenient when women do the same on men.
Discrimination is directed against groups: gender, race religion, ethnicity, class, etc. Any discrimination that you experience personally is directed against you, not as an individual that some person may dislike or disapprove of for some particular reason, but as a perceived representative of one or more groups. While discrimination is never 'right,' it is nearly always regarded as more 'acceptable' to knock the powerful than the weak, and, while things are indeed changing in many ways and on many fronts, men, as a group, with many individual exceptions, are still more powerful than are women, as a group, with many individual exceptions.
'Ladies Night,' usually an otherwise slow business night, uses free or discounted admissions as bait to attract female customers, who, on average, have smaller incomes than men, on average, and can therefore not afford to spend as much on recreation. The women themselves, while they may spend some money there, function primarily as bait to attract men into the business on an otherwise slow night so that the business has an opportunity it would not otherwise have to separate the men from more of their money. Done the other way around it would not work nearly so well -- women would likely not be pouring into the place in large numbers to buy men cheap drinks -- so it is rarely done that way. The purpose is to help out the bar/club owners' pockets, not the women's.
In order to qualify as sexual harassment, a behavior has to include some sort of power differential, be it physical power or the power to interfere with someone's ability to obtain, retain, perform, or progress in a job, housing, education, child custody, etc. As more women gain access to the various seats of power, more are misusing it, some in ways that qualify as sexual harassment. Their abuses are often -- and wrongly -- not taken as seriously as men's for several reasons, including the following: 1. if you compare the reports of sexual harassment committed by women vs by men, both the actual numbers and the percentages are much smaller for women; 2. there is rarely a component of physical intimidation involved when women sexually harass men, so the visceral fear factor is missing; 3. perhaps because of the lack of physical intimidation, men may be less likely to report sexual harassment, for fear of being disbelieved or even laughed at; 4. because of the lack of physical intimidation, female offenders are perhaps not seen as equally dangerous, so may be penalized less severely by either employers or courts. It's both wrong and illegal, though, whoever does it, or to whom. Don't forget that men can and do also harass other men, too, and women, other women.
