7 Simple Golf Tips... To Break Bad Habits and Help You Play Better
Bad golfing habits are very hard to break. When we first began learning how to golf was the time we learned the quickest. There is hope for us golfers that have developed bad habits, we can break these bad habits and learn new correct ones. Below is 7 simple tips to assist you in improving your golf game, and how to break away from those frustrating bad habits.
1. It is very important to have good aim at your target. If we can't hit the ball in the direction of our target, we will never be able to putt it into those little holes. In order to make the ball take flight we need to strike it solidly with the clubface. Make sure the clubface is squarely aligned at the target. Next step is to align your shoulders parallel to the target line.
2. If there are possible problems in the direct target line, aim away from these hazards. (Bunkers, Water, Trees etc.). Identify the hazard, and tee the ball on the same side as the hazard. This allows you to avoid penalty strokes, by keeping the ball in play, or costing you extra swings.
3. Most common cause of bad shots is due to poor wrist action, this occurs about 90% of the time when we make a bad shot. To correct bad wrist action, keep the left wrist flat compared to the back of your left arm, and the back of the left hand. Your backswing should be no further than a shoulder turn.
4. The shoulder turn should follow your swing, the shoulder can't lead the swing and should remain passive. The shoulder turn will equate to what direction your club will take, and what direction the ball will travel upon impact.
5. Reading the greens is very important. Golf balls have a very uncanny knack of not doing what you want them to do. Just kidding, but remember they will follow the terrain, and roll away from hills, and towards water hazards. This is important to remember, and easy to make the necessary adjustments.
6. The roll of a putt is also affected by the grain of the greens. Big secret to reading the grain is, shiny grass the grain is moving away from you, dull grass the grain is coming towards you. So to use this "Big Secret" remember putts with the grain go fast & far. Putts against the grain go slow and not as far.
7. Maintain your correct swing position with a simple drill. Put a ball down and take your address. Let the shadow of your head cover the ball, and take your swing while looking at the shadow. You will have lost the correct swing center if the shadow moves off the ball, keeping the shadow on the ball, means you have maintained the correct swing position. (Although the shadow may move a little bit.)
