Three Piece Golf Ball Construction
Modern three piece golf balls are typically made from a synthetic core which makes up most of the balls size and mass, a middle layer which is relatively thin and an external cover.
Different manufacturers will make their three piece balls using different materials but they all follow the above general design. The core is usually made of rubber and may not be spherical in shape. It may not even be solid as some golf balls have a liquid core. It may also contain weights made from specific materials such as tungsten to ensure a perfect centre of balance.
The thin middle layer which is sometimes referred to as the mantle is normally made from a substance called Surlyn which is a resin that has specific properties advantageous to the manufacture of golf balls. Surlyn is particularly known for its resilience, hardness and stiffness and is especially resistant to cuts and abrasions; ideal for a ball which is constantly being hit with a metal club.
On top of all this is the outer layer or cover again made from durable material which allows the golfer to feel the impact of the club head against the ball. The main thing that people notice about the outer cover of a golf ball though is the dimples. The dimples on a golf ball aid aerodynamics and can help the player control lots of different aspects of the shot including spin, speed, distance and trajectory. Air friction is a particular problem associated with sending a golf ball off in the correct direction and is one of the things that the dimples are used to control. A solid ball will tend to push the air in front of it more causing the air to part earlier. As there is less air in close proximity to the ball, lift is reduced. The dimples of a golf ball tend to allow the air to be closer to the ball before it separates, therefore maintaining lift for longer. By introducing spin, the golfer can use the dimples on the ball to manipulate air flow over the ball's surface which will enable him to increase lift or even change the ball's direction in mid flight.
The modern materials used in the construction of the golf ball make it pretty much indestructible too. You can't break it or cut it making it a lot more durable than golf balls of the past.
As you can probably imagine modern three piece golf balls are relatively difficult to produce, especially those with a liquid core. This makes them more expensive but all players will notice a greater ability to control the ball and so the extra expense is usually seen to be worth it.
