A Proper Way to Swing a Golf Club - It's Both Physical and Mental
Inevitably golfers get around to the great question of the proper swing. Many attribute the game to shepherds hitting rocks into rabbit holes where St. Andrews Golf Course is now located in Scotland. No matter the time, place, or inventor, the collective conscious thought of golfers is mostly spent on a proper way to swing a golf club.
Physically swinging the club is easy. Like any kid does with a stick of the proper length to reach the ground while standing almost vertical and then figuring out how to hit some rock, weed sticking up, or a blowing piece of paper, it is a lot of fun but not easy. Page after page in golf magazines clinically describe every nuance of stance and grip which are mostly uncomfortable.
Mentally swinging a golf club is also easy, if you have the right picture in your brain. Most great golf swing coaches spend just as much time on mental as on physical practice. Good visualization comes from watching a good golfer swing and then repeating that vision in your mind. The big problem is teaching your body each part of that swing and then hitting practice shots with that visualized image swing.
Beginners mostly try to do to much to quick. There is a feel to hitting a golf ball that comes from first trying very short swings and hitting the ball only a few feet. Chocking down on the club and bending over at the waist helps reduce the complexity of the swing. A beginning golfer would do well to only chip in the beginning until the feel of club contacting ball with a little clink sound becomes consistent. The distance of ball travel and length of swing can be increased when the basic feel has been accomplished.
The proper way to swing a golf club is complicated and challenging and as the old shepherds in Scotland learned, it can be a pleasurable lifetime pursuit.
